Looking to freshen up your kitchen? Maybe you have some older laminate counters that you’ve been meaning to replace for a while. Some of the mainstream choices would be a granite or quartz. Well one material choice that has been growing in popularity over the past several years is a classic butcher block. We love this trend, and this counter is a go-to for our home makeovers for so many reasons. Here are a few:
1. Cost-effective Butcher block is cost effective! You’ll pay a fraction of what you’d pay for a granite or quartz. On average, a quartz countertop will cost you about $60/sq ft. A butcher block counter could cost you as little as $14/sq ft. Literally 4X less than quartz. We like to get our butcher block counters from Home Depot since we’ve found that they have great sizing and pricing options for butcher block.
2. So trendy & looks great! Elaboration un-needed for this one. Butcher block counters are undoubtedly charming and add a sense of warmth to any kitchen while looking modern.
3. Hard to damage
Hear me out! Yes, it can be easy to stain or scratch your counter if you are not putting the proper top coat on. We recommend using a Varathane Polyurethane top coat from Home Depot. We recommend using the oil based clear satin. This will provide a protective coating over your would to keep it safe and give it a subtle warm look while keeping the natural look of the wood nice and light. No stain necessary. Below is an example of what 3 layers of this looks like on a Hevea butcher block counter:

If you do damage the counter, the beauty of butcher block is you can simply sand it down! Re-coat and it will look good as new! This will give you huge peace of mind when you do accidentally scratch it. If you scratch a granite, quartz or laminate, a lot of times you are just stuck with it.
4. Environmentally friendly
Obviously, butcher block is a made of natural materials.. Because it is not heavily manufactured, you can feel good about this choice.
5. You can install them yourself!
Now, if you don’t identify as a handy person, you may want to leverage this part out to someone who is qualified. If you do happen to be handy and own a circular saw, you can cut and install these counters yourself! Further saving you on installation costs.
So, would you ever consider butcher block for your countertop? Let us know!
